European Union must respect Iranian people’s right to rebellion against tyranny

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 10th December 1948 is the first pillar of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and therefore of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, as incorporated in the European Union treaties by article 6 of the Treaty on the European Union.

The Universal Declaration recognises that ‘it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law.’

For decades, the Iranian theocratic tyranny has ruthlessly imprisoned, tortured and assassinated its own people without ever being properly sanctioned by international judicial mechanisms. In spite of the repeated insistence of the legitimate opposition representatives of the Iranian people and human rights associations, the European Union, regrettably, did not condition the links with the Iranian regime to the accomplishment of basic human rights, foremost, the right to be governed by the rule of law rather than the rule of tyrants claiming to act in the name of God.

The Iranian people therefore concluded it had to use its last resort recourse, rebellion against tyranny, as foreseen in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Five days after the start of the present rebellion, the European Union institutions failed to make any declaration, be it on recognising the rights of the Iranian people under the declaration of human rights, be it on an appeal for the Iranian authorities not to assassinate, arrest or torture its own citizens or still, for them to recognise the right of the Iranian people to replace the theocratic system by the self-government democratic system.

ARCHumankind urges the European Union institutions to respect article 6 of the European Union Treaty, to alleviate the Iranian people’s plight and to urgently issue a declaration with this aim.

ARCHumankind appeals to all freedom loving people of the European Union to stand by the Iranian people’s fundamental rights to self-government, freedom and democracy.
